Owen Smith met with Kevin Kidman, the DVSA’s Director of Operations and Gareth Jervis, the Head of Estates in his Pontypridd office last Friday alongside Chris Bryant MP.
Mr Smith called for the meeting following the DVSA announcement that Pontypridd driving test centre would close, with plans to move operations to Llantrisant LGV driving centre.
Commenting after the meeting, Owen Smith said:
“I was pleased to have the opportunity to make the case in person to the DVSA to keep the test centre in Pontypridd.
“I stressed the importance of the test centre remaining here in Ponty- people from the top end of the Valley in places like Treherbert would really struggle to get to Llantrisant to be able to learn and to do their test. Having a test centre in Llantrisant would add to the existing congestion and the close proximity of the motorway just wouldn’t be practical for learners and instructors.
“During the meeting I suggested a number of sites the DVSA could use across Pontypridd, and I really hope they will consider these options to ensure the centre remains in the area.
“The move to Llantrisant simply appears to be a Tory cost cutting exercise that’s filtered down from Whitehall. Unfortunately once again it’s the people of Pontypridd who are having to bear the brunt of Tory cuts.”
