Pontypridd MP Owen Smith will host the parliamentary launch of ‘The impact of welfare reforms on the Valleys’ report on Tuesday 04 November 2014 at 17:30 in Committee Room 13 of the House of Commons.
The event will be an opportunity to discuss the significant findings of the report published by the Centre for Regional Economic & Social Research at Sheffield Hallam University and commissioned by the Industrial Communities Alliance (Wales). Findings of this research highlight the fact that the South Wales Valleys have been harder hit by welfare reform than almost anywhere in the UK.
The report shows that impacts of the welfare reforms include an average loss of income per working age adult of up to £1,000 per year in our hardest hit communities and the potential loss of 3,000 jobs in the South Wales Valleys as a result of reduced consumer spending. You find a copy of the report here.
The speakers at the meeting will be:
• Owen Smith, Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and MP for Pontypridd
• Professor Steve Fothergill, Co-author of ‘The impact of welfare reforms on the Valleys’ report (Sheffield Hallam University, Centre for Regional Economic & Social Research)
• Peter Slater, Director of the Industrial Communities Alliance
• Cllr Jane Ward, Chair of the Industrial Communities Alliance (Wales)
