Pontypridd MP Owen Smith was delighted to welcome 1st Newtown Llantwit Scouts to his office on Friday.
The twenty three Scouts, accompanied by their Leader Stuart Baker and Assistant Leader Jeff Prince, stayed at Owen Smith’s constituency office overnight. The Llantwit Fardre-based Scouts are completing their ‘Dragon Award’ which involves them sleeping in a different unusual place every month.
The Newtown Llantwit Scouts have slept in a huge variety of unique and exciting venues including Cardiff City Football Club’s home dressing room, the Millennium Stadium pitch, Pontypridd Police Station, an Edward’s school bus and at St Fagans Museum.
Just recently, their Scout Leader Stuart asked them where they would like to sleep next and the Scouts requested the Houses of Parliament. Though unfortunately this couldn’t be arranged due to strict security protocols, the Scouts could stay at the local MP’s office on Morgan Street, Pontypridd.
The Scouts’ visit began with a few words from Owen Smith on the work he does in Parliament and Pontypridd, followed by some interesting questions from the Scouts ranging from ‘What does your work involve in the House of Commons?’ to ‘Have you ever had tea with David Cameron?’
After the lively discussions, Owen Smith presented the new Scouts with their certificates following their investiture by Stuart.
Commenting after the visit, Owen Smith said:
“It was fantastic to welcome the local Scouts to my office in Pontypridd- it was a real pleasure to meet so many enthusiastic young people.
“The Scouts gave me a good grilling during the question and answer session; we had a really fun evening and I’d like to thank the children and Stuart and the rest of the volunteers who made it such a success”
“The Scouts told me about all of their adventures in their sleep outs but they were disappointed not to receive a reply from David Cameron about their request to stay at Number 10. I’ve promised to write to him myself to see if they can get a response!”
Scout Leader Stuart Baker added:
“The kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the evening, the presentations were fantastic and were very memorable. I know that the parents that came to see the Investitures were very grateful that Mr Smith had facilitated the evening.”
