Commenting on the news that Natwest is set to close its Treforest and Talbot Green banks, Owen Smith MP said:
“These announcements are a severe blow to the communities and businesses in Talbot Green and Treforest Estate.
“It is particularly disappointing that such a decision has been made by a bank that is still largely owned by the taxpayer; reportedly with the intention of preparing for its future sale.
“Make no mistake, these closures will have a detrimental impact upon our communities. I am particularly concerned that these decisions appear to have been taken with little consultation and without due regard to the Access to Banking protocol – designed to ensure financial inclusion.
“The lack of consultation with the community, and its elected representatives, falls short of the standard I would expect of a bank that continues to be reliant on taxpayers.”
